My Philosophy of Education
The Curriculum
The curriculum should be structured in such a way that it teaches students the necessary skills and strategies needed to construct knowledge, comprehend the world, use resources effectively, be responsible citizens and to become life-long learners. For instance, in this age of technology, communication and globalization it has become increasingly important to teach students how to think as opposed to teaching students what to think. Constructing knowledge is more helpful to students because this is a skill they can take with them all throughout life. Similarly, students need this knowledge along with specific strategies to sort through, filter and make sense of the plethora of information available to them via the web and other sources. It is imperative that our children know how to think, how to live and how to make smart, responsible decisions in a diverse world.
The curriculum should incorporate times for the students to practice specific skills, such as reading groups and writing workshop to help students with specific skills. In order for this to be successful, the curriculum needs to be flexible, changing between educational approaches based on the needs of the students. In addition, it should include activities that encompass many learning disciplines at one time. For example, thinking and real world problems including math, geography, art, research, map skills, reading and writing in order to solve the problem.
