In the 21st century, it has become increasingly important for teachers and students alike to use technology in a school setting. This page presents my knowledge of technology and uses that are available for my classroom.
- Class web site to post student selected work and class activities to help keep parents informed.
- Web pages created to post lesson plans and assignments for students.
- Class created web pages to represent units studied and knowledge learned.
- Anything having to do with web pages would be password protected.
Examples of ways students can use e-mail to enhance learning:
- Send letters to the Editor.
- Contact a public official after researching a community concern.
- Email favorite authors.
- Email experts for a research project.
- Join an e-pal program to communicate with students all around the world.
In recent years, e-mail has become an important means of communication. I like e-mail for several reasons.
- I can save important information received via e-mail.
- I can contact parents and staff quickly with the use of a mass mailing list.
- I have found that e-mail increases parental communication and involvement.
- Texting or Instant Messaging to hold class discussions. A great way for students’ voices to be heard!
(ex: iPod or Zoon)
- Use as a digital recorder-record classroom lectures and/or discussions for playback later
- Interview people for projects and record it.
- Record notes (from class or from fieldtrips)
- Play multimedia items such as audio books or documentaries.
- Mobcasting- podcasting by cell phone.
*for more information on the use of e-mail, IM, digital media players and cell phones in the classroom please see the powerpoint titled
Digital Immigrants Teaching Digital Native in the 21st Century located at http://thwt.org/ncssslides.ppt From the website http://thwt.org/.
- Pictures of class activities to post on web pages, or to save on disks for students to keep
- Take pictures of students to learn names quickly.
- Use student photos to do projects such as Kid Pix.
- Can use a web cam for live views of the class for parents to view during the day or a live view of class pet for students to view from home on weekends.
- Video editing for students or teachers
- Teachers can video themselves teaching to evaluate selves.
- Teachers can video class activities and edit to make class videos/DVDs for students to check out for home use.
- Students can video themselves acting out plays or simulations.
- Students can make "movies" correlating with the curriculum.
- The videos can be posted on the school/class website.
Ex: Power Point or Kid Pix
- Students can make slideshows to demonstrate their knowledge over a topic.
- Students can create slideshows for presentations, such as at a school sponsored cultural diversity fair.
- Teachers can use slideshows to present knowledge to students.
- Slideshows can be used to make presentations to parents, organizations such as PTO and school administrators.
- Digital pictures can be made into a slideshow complete with music and even placed on a DVD.
There are a variety of educational computer programs that work well for horizontal enrichment and research. For example:
- Math: Mathosaurus
- Social Studies: Oregon Trail
- Science: Amazon Rainforest
- Reading: ABC with Hickory and ME
- Typing: Jump Start Typing
- Research: First Connections Golden Book Encyclopedia
The following websites are great resources for planning and for use with ages K-12.
